**Elementary School Number Sense Lesson 3: Adding Fractions with the Same Denominator**

Many moons ago we looked at adding fractions with different denominators (in

**AddFracDiff**). Today we will add fractions that have the same denominator. This concept has appeared

**6 times**on elementary tests so far this year, with a median placement at

**question # 23**.

When fractions have the same denominator, adding them consists of two quick steps:

- Add the numerators, and keep the same denominator.
- Reduce the fraction if possible.

**Example 1: 3/12 + 7/12 = ___**

- Add the numerators: 3 + 7 =
**10**. Keep**12**as the denominator. - Reduce: 10/12 =
**5/6**.

**Example 2: 5/14 + 3/14 = ___**

- Add the numerators: 5 + 3 =
**8**. Keep**14**as the denominator. - Reduce: 8/14 =
**4/7**.

**Example 3: 2/9 + 4/9 = ___**

- Add the numerators: 2 + 4 =
**6**. Keep**9**as the denominator. - Reduce: 6/9 =
**2/3**.

**Example 4: 3/20 + 7/20 = ___**

- Add the numerators: 3 + 7 =
**10**. Keep**20**as the denominator. - Reduce: 10/20 =
**1/2**.

**Example 5: 11/36 + 13/36 = ___**

- Add the numerators: 11 + 13 =
**24**. Keep**36**as the denominator. - Reduce: 24/36 =
**2/3**.

**Example 6: 17/48 + 13/48 = ___**

- Add the numerators: 17 + 13 =
**30**. Keep**48**as the denominator. - Reduce: 30/48 = 15/24 =
**5/8**.
