**Elementary School Number Sense Lesson 7: Exponents**

Today's lesson takes a step back from two concepts covered previously:

**ExponentFrac**and

**ExponentVar**. It has appeared

**4 times**so far on this year's elementary school tests, with a median at

**question # 68**.

Most of these problems are pretty straightforward; there are just a few basics to keep in mind:

- A number raised to the power of
**N**is multiplied by itself,**N**(number of) times. - Any number to the power of
**0**is equal to**1**. - In the order of operations (
**OrderOfOper**), exponents come before everything else (except parentheses).

**Example 1:**

**2**

^{4}= ___1. 2

^{4}= 2 times itself, 4 times

2. 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 =

**16**

**Example 2:**

**3**

^{4}= ___1. 3

^{4}= 3 times itself, 4 times

2. 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 =

**81**

**Example 3:**

**8**

^{2}÷ 2^{4}= ___1. 8

^{2}=

**64**

2. 2

^{4}=

**16**

3. 64 ÷ 16 =

**4**

**Example 4:**

**3**

^{0}+ 4^{2}+ 5^{3}= ___1. 3

^{0}=

**1**

2. 4

^{2}=

**16**

3. 5

^{3}=

**125**

4. 1 + 16 + 125 =

**142**

**Example 5:**

**2**

^{0}+ 3^{1}+ 4^{2}+ 5^{3}= ___1. 2
