The median of a street is found in the

**middle**of the street. The median of an ordered set of numbers is the

**middle number**. Three important things to remember:

- The numbers must be arranged in order from smallest to largest (or from largest to smallest).
- If there are an
**odd**number of terms, the median is the**middle term**in this arranged set. - If there are an
**even**number of terms, the median is the**average**of the**middle two terms**.

**How to Solve:**

- Count the terms
- Mentally arrange them in order
- Select the middle term (or take the average of the middle two terms)

**Example 1: The median of 16, 33, 18, 4 and 23 is ___**

- There are
**5**terms - In order, they are 4, 16, 18, 23, 33
- The middle term is
**18**

**Example 2: The median of 25, 7, 29 and 9 is ___**

- There are
**4**terms - In order, they are 7, 9, 25, 29
- The middle two terms are
**9 & 25**; their average is 34/2 =**17**

**Example 3: The median of 6.4, 7.8, 4.6 and 3.2 is ___**

- There are
**4**terms - In order, they are 3.2, 4.6, 6.4, 7.8
- The middle two terms are
**4.6 & 6.4**; their average is 11/2 =**5.5**

**Example 4: The median of -17, -11, 2, -6, and 13 is ___**

- There are
**5**terms - In order, they are -17, -11, -6, 2, 13
- The middle term is
**-6**

**Example 5: What is the median of: 12, 8, 2 and 10? ___**

- There are
**4**terms - In order, they are 2, 8, 10, 12
- The middle two terms are
**8 & 10**; their average is**9**

**Example 6: The median of 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 is ___**

- There are
**8**terms - They are already in order
- The middle terms are
**3 & 5**; their average is**4**
