**Elementary School Number Sense Lesson 2: Multiplying by 12**

Today we will revisit a concept we discussed last summer (

**Mult12-19**), but this time we'll solve the problems differently. Instead of "doubling and adding to the right," we'll basically use the distributive property of multiplication (

**MultDistribPr**). This concept has appeared

**6 times**so far this year, with a median placement at

**question # 18**.

**Number Dojo Level: 132**

When multiplying by 12, we can think of the problem as a number times (10 + 2). So instead of one fairly time-consuming problem, we can break it up into two quick ones.

**Example 1: 12 x 28 = ___**

- Think of this as (10 x 28) + (2 x 28).
- The answer is 280 + 56 =
**336**.

**Example 2: 12 x 53 = ___**

- Think of this as (10 x 53) + (2 x 53).
- The answer is 530 + 106 =
**636**.

**Example 3: 31 x 12 = ___**

- Think of this as (31 x 10) + (31 x 2).
- The answer is 310 + 62 =
**372**.

**Example 4: 12 x 44 = ___**

- Think of this as (10 x 44) + (2 x 44).
- The answer is 440 + 88 =
**528**.

**Example 5: 12 x 87 = ___**

- Think of this as (10 x 87) + (2 x 87).
- The answer is 870 + 174 =
**1044**.
