**High School Number Sense Lesson 14: A is What Percent of B?**

Sometimes you are given two numbers and asked

*what percent*one is of the other. This calculation is actually a little easier than it looks, which we'll get into shortly. On high school tests this year, PercentAis_% showed up

**10 times**this year within the first 21 problems of the tests (usually around

**question # 13**).

**Number Dojo Level: 160**

**To solve these problems:**

- Think of the first number (with the unknown %) as A and the second number (with the
**of**) as B. - Mentally create a fraction with A/B.
- Simply the fraction.
- Multiply by 100.

**Example 1: 16 is what % of 64?**

- A is 16, B is 64
- Create a fraction: 16/64
- Simply to get 1/4
- Multiply by 100. 1/4 of 100 is
**25**.

**Example 2: 24 is ___% of 80**

- A is 24, B is 80
- Create a fraction: 24/80
- Simplify to get 3/10
- Multiply by 100. 3/10 of 100 is
**30**.

**Example 3: 9 is ___% of 54**

- A is 9, B is 54
- Create a fraction: 9/54
- Simplify to get 1/6
- Multiply by 100. 1/6 of 100 is
**16 2/3**.

**Example 4: What % of 24 is 36?**

- Be careful...this needs to be thought of as:
**36 is what % of 24**? A is 36, B is 24. - Create a fraction: 36/24
- Simplify to get 3/2
- Multiply by 100. 3/2 of 100 is
**150**.
