**Elementary School Number Sense Lesson 17: Rounding**

Today's lesson is an extension of

**PlaceValue**, and (in my opinion) is the second-most basic number sense concept. That's why I chose to make rounding level 2 in the Number Dojo app. This concept appeared once per elementary test this year (

**8 times**total), with a median placement at

**question # 7**.

**Number Dojo Level: 2**

Rounding to a specific place value requires 3 steps:

- Look at the digit just to the right of the place value in question.
- If that number is
**less than 5**, round down. If it is**5 or greater**, round up. - If rounding up, add 1 to the place value in question. Change everything to the right to a zero.

**Example 1: 918274 rounded to the hundreds is ___**

- The hundreds digit is
**2**; look at the**7**on the right. - Since 7 > 5, round up.
- Change the 2 to a
**3**and change everything to the right to a**0**. The answer is**918300**.

**Example 2: 816274 rounded to the ten-thousands is ___**

- The ten-thousands digit is
**1**; look at the**6**on the right. - Since 6 > 5, round up.
- Change the 1 to a
**2**and change everything to the right to a**0**. The answer is**820000**.

**Example 3: 958307 rounded to the ten's place is ___**

- The tens place is
**0**; look at the**7**on the right. - Since 7 > 5, round up.
- Change the 0 to a
**1**and change everything to the right to a**0**. The answer is**958310**.

**Example 4: Round 3.14159 to the nearest tenth. ___**

- The tenths place is the first
**1**; look at the**4**on the right. - Since 4 < 5, round down.
- Leave the 1 alone, and change everything to the right to a
**0**. (Since this is number sense, remove extra 0's). The answer is**3.1**

**Example 5: Round 147.3524 to the nearest hundredth. ___**

- The hundredths place is the
**5**; look at the**2**on the right. - Since 2 < 5, round down.
- Leave the 5 alone, and remove everything to the right. The answer is
**147.35**
