**Elementary School Number Sense Lesson 13: Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator**

A couple of months ago we learned how to add fractions with the same denominator (

**AddFracSame**). Today we will subtract them. This concept appeared

**7 times**on this year's tests, with a median placement at

**question # 38**.

When fractions have the same denominator, subtracting them is as easy as 1, 2:

- Subtract the 2nd numerator from the 1st, and keep the same denominator.
- Reduce the fraction if possible.

**Example 1: 13/15 - 1/15 = ___**

- Subtract the numerators: 13 - 1 =
**12**. Keep**15**as the denominator. - Reduce: 12/15 =
**4/5**

**Example 2: 11/18 - 7/18 = ___**

- Subtract the numerators: 11 - 7 =
**4**. Keep**18**as the denominator. - Reduce: 4/18 =
**2/9**

**Example 3: 23/36 - 7/36 = ___**

- Subtract the numerators: 23 - 7 =
**16**. Keep**36**as the denominator. - Reduce: 16/36 =
**4/9**

**Example 4: 37/28 - 11/28 = ___**

- Subtract the numerators: 37 - 11 =
**2****6**. Keep**28**as the denominator. - Reduce: 26/28 =
**13/14**

**Example 5: 37/30 - 25/30 = ___**

- Subtract the numerators: 37 - 25 =
**12**. Keep**30**as the denominator. - Reduce: 12/30 =
**2/5**

**Example 6: 14/27 - 5/27 = ___**

- Subtract the numerators: 14 - 5 =
**9**. Keep**27**as the denominator. - Reduce: 9/27 =
**1/3**
